Installation & Setup

Note

Drivers should be installed on the machine using the device.

Note

If you have other scanning devices connected, unplug them all. Be sure to note which USB ports other scanning devices are connected as they have already been established in Serving Line setup.

You will need to configure the Metrologic (Honeywell) MS9540 Barcode Scanner to interact with Newton software. In order to do this, you will need to print a portion of this documentation and scan the programming codes. Refer to Printing and Exporting in Confluence for printing directions.

Note

If you have any issues with the barcodes, please refer to the Metrologic User's Guide. Barcodes are on page 1-1 and the top of 15-2.

  • Unplug all Scanning Devices - Unplug all scanning devices from the computer.
  • Install the Driver
    Access the Honeywell website and click on the Software tab

    1. Download and Install the Driver

      Administrator rights are required to install the device driver. If you do not have administrative rights to the computer(s) you are installing the device, contact Central Office support or your IT department.

      1. Access the Honeywell website.
      2. Select the Handheld Barcode Scanner from the navigation pane.
      3. Select the Voyager 98X0 scanner from the list.
      4. Click on the Software tab for the Voyager 9520/40 Series scanner.
      5. Click on the the Honeywell Scanning and Mobility (HSM) USB Serial Driver under Drivers.

      6. Complete the Software Download registration form with the appropriate information. Then, click the Download button.

        You must read the End User License Agreement and accept the terms by checking off the box.

      7. Determine if the computer is a 32-bit or a 64-bit system.
        1. Click on the Start button from your computer.
        2. Locate Computer or My Computer in the menu and right-click.
        3. Click on the Properties button.

        4. Under the term System, look at the System typeIf you do not see a number designated as 32-bit or 64-bit Operating System, you are running a 32-bit system.

      8. Locate the  under Drivers.
      9. Locate the downloaded .zip file on your computer or local drive and double-click the file to open.

      10. Right-click on the file named HSM USB Serial Driver r1.19-WHQL-03-08-2013 or higher and select Copy.
      11. Use the breadcrumb trail, folders, or the navigation folder Image Removed to back out of the file location.

      12. Locate and double-click on Program Files folder in the c: drive (My Computer).

      13. Locate and double-click the MCS folder.

      14. Locate and double-click the Newton POS folder.

      15. Right-click and select Paste to add the file in the folder.

      16. Double click on the folder HSM USB Serial Driver r1.19-WHQL-03-08-2013 or higher to open.

      17. Double-click on the appropriate installation file depending on the operating system you are running to begin installation. Follow the installation instructions.

      18. Double-click the setup.bat file to begin the installation process.

    2. Connect the Scanner - Connect the scanner(s) into the computer in the proper location.
    3. Program the Scanner - Program the scanner to enter a configuration mode.

      Note

      If you have any issues with the barcodes, please refer to the Metrologic User's Guide. Barcodes are on page 1-1 and the top of 15-2. Follow the selective print instructions above.

       

      1. Power-up your scanner.
      2. Press and hold the button to scan the Enter/Exit Configuration Mode bar code. You should hear three (3) beeps.
      3. Program the scanner to enable Uni-Directional USB Serial Emulation - Press and hold the button to scan the Enable Uni-Directional USB Serial Emulation Mode barcode. You should hear one (1) beep.
      4. Exit scanner setup. - Press and hold the button to scan the Enter/Exit Configuration Mode bar code. You should hear three (3) beeps. Save the new configuration.

      Locate the Correct Port Number - Determine which port the scanner is using.
      1. Click on the Start button from your computer.
      2. Locate and click on the Control Panel in the menu.
      3. Locate the Hardware and Sound settings and click on the title.
      4.  In the Hardware and Sound window, locate Device and Printers and click on Device Manager.
      5. In the Device Manager window, locate Ports (COM & LPT). Click on the right-facing arrow to expand Ports and view port devices.

      6. Locate the device named Honeywell Unidirectional Device (COM#) and double click.

      7. Next, click on the Port Settings tab. You will need to make notes of the following information in order to proceed.
        1. COM# (In parenthesis at the top of the window)
        2. Bits per second
        3. Data Bits
        4. Parity
        5. Stop Bits

    5. Login to Newton
      1. Login to Newton. 
      2. Locate and click on the Administration and Maintenance tab.
      3. Locate the Serving Line option in the Point-of-Sale Setup ribbon.
      4. Select either Serving Lines or Serving Line Configs depending on if your District uses line or a particular template. If you are unsure, check with your point of contact in the District.

    6. Establish Serving Line configurations

      Note

      Step 7 6 includes instructions for both Serving Line and Serving Line Configs. Choose the correct section your District utilizes for setup.

       

      1. In the Serving-Line Maintenance window, select a cafeteria by clicking on a row or using the drop-down arrow and click the Edit button. If you use the drop-down arrow, be sure to select the proper serving line to install the device.

      2. Click on the Override Settings tab.
      3. Scroll down and locate the Devices section in the parameters.
      4. Once you have located the Devices section click on Customer Input Device #1, then the ellipsis button.

        If you were utilizing another input device and plan on the continued use of the other device, select Customer Input Device #2.

      5. Use the drop-down arrow to locate and select the Metrologic Barcode Scanner (Unidirectional Serial).
      6. Ensure the settings match the information noted in Step 5.
        1. Baud Rate = Bits per second   Click the cell and change it to match the device settings.
        2. Data Bits Click the cell and change it to match the device settings.
        3. Parity Click the cell and use the drop-down menu to match the device settings.
        4. Port Name Click the cell and change it to match the device settings.
        5. Stop Bits Click the cell and use the dropdown menu to match the device settings.
        6. Click Ok when you have completed adjusting the settings.

      7. Click Ok again to exit out of the Edit Serving Line window.
      8. Click Close in the Serving-Line Maintenance window.
    7.  Test the Scanner

    Test the scanner by starting a new meal, starting a serving line configured to the template, or modified for the scanner. Scan barcodes of a few students to ensure Newton is recognizing them in the system.

    Usage

    1. Login to Newton (Back Office) from the main machine and start an operating day by clicking the Start Operating Day link on the checklistchecklist or Start New Day from the ribbon.
    2. Start a meal (either breakfast or lunch) by clicking Start Meal (Lunch) or Start Meal (Breakfast) link on the checklistthe checklist or use the Meal Control Panel in the ribbon to start a meal.
    3. Ensure the date is correct on the Meal Calendar screen and click Ok.
    4. On the POS serving line with the scanner, double click on the Newton POS icon to open up to the login screen.

      Note

      If you will be enrolling students on the main machine, locate the Meal Control Panel and click on Main Machine to run Newton POS.

    5. Login to Newton POS by entering the username and password given to you by the system administrator, then click Ok.

    6. In the Customer Input Device window, scan the student's barcode identification card.

      • In the bottom left-hand corner, notice which device is set for the serving line.
      • In the bottom right-hand corner, the status of the device is shown. If it working properly, you should see Running. If the device is not functioning properly, you will see Error. Click on Error to review the message.

    7. The student should appear in the Name window. Proceed with normal serving line processes.

    After you have finished with line servings, click the Quit Serving Line button to exit Newton POS.

    Then, click the Exit Point-Of-Sale button.

    Be sure to return to the main machine and stop the meal and post transactions for the day.
